Nehru Zoological Park is the home for Asiatic lions. Currently, 8 of them, including 4 female and 4 male Lions started showing a few days ago. Initially, the felines had cough, nasal drippings and have shown other symptoms of Coronavirus.
On the 24th of April, some of the caretakers noticed that the Lions had a loss of appetite and immediately alerted the veterinary team. They conducted RT-PCR tests immediately and 8 of the lions tested positive for coronavirus. In addition, they sent the samples to CCMB.
Earlier, Asiatic Lions tested positive for coronavirus in a Hyderabad Zoo, the Zoo officials assumed that the caretakers may have transmitted the disease to the lions. However, the CCMB will carry out various tests to confirm it.
The scientists from CCMB suggested the Zoo officials take necessary precautions and start medication immediately. Meanwhile, they isolated the lions from the rest of the animals.
The zoo authorities are likely to conduct CTScan to find out the extent of infection and its effect on the animals. Meanwhile, CCMB will conclude if the virus came from humans.
Ministry of Environment’s response to the lions tested positive for coronavirus.
On Tuesday, Asiatic Lions tested positive for coronavirus in a Hyderabad Zoo, the Environment Ministry said that there is no evidence that animals can transmit the virus to humans. They urged people not to be concerned.
“All the eight lions have responded well to the treatment and recovering. They are behaving normally and eating well. Preventive measures are already in place for all zoo staff and the zoo has been closed to visitors to avoid minimal external contact” – Ministry of Environment’s official report read.
Earlier, The Nehru zoological park was closed for visitors. This was done as a precautionary measure in response to the increasing COVID-19 cases.
Last year, a tiger at Bronx zoo, in Newyork also tested positive for coronavirus. Subsequently, there were other reports of similar incidents – A domestic cat from Belgium and two dogs from Hong Kong tested positive for the virus. There were no reported incidents of animals infecting humans.
