Earthquake tremors were felt in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta on Monday. The intensity of today’s earthquake on the Richter scale is said to be 5.6. According to the Meteorological and Geophysical Agency, the epicenter of today’s earthquake was at a depth of 10 km on the ground in Cianjur in West Java. According to the report of AFP, about 46 people were killed and at least 700 people were injured in this earthquake in Java.

Earthquakes are frequent in Indonesia, but it is unusual to feel them in Jakarta. Indonesia with a population of more than 270 million is frequently affected by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.
In February this year, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked West Sumatra province here, killing at least 25 people and injuring over 460. In January 2021, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck West Sulawesi province, killing more than 100 people and injuring nearly 6,500. Earlier in 2004, a powerful Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami killed nearly 230,000 people in a dozen countries, most of them in Indonesia.
