About Shang Chi in MCU
Shang-Chi appeared in comic books for the first time in the 1970s. Having been portrayed as a kung-fu master and the son of the villain Fu Manchu, he was a painfully stereotyped depiction of Chinese culture at the time. The quality of his English was not as good as that of his fellow superheroes. It was difficult to believe that they would debut the first Asian hero in Marvel’s repertoire when Liu told Men’s Health that he was “almost disappointed”. Are there any other opportunities for Asian superheroes, besides this one guy who is a martial arts master? There was something seductive about it that I did not feel was true to life; I didn’t find it relatable.”
However, the film reworks Shang-Chi’s origin story while avoiding racist cliches. A mysterious organization known as Ten Rings traps Simu Liu within its web, and he becomes trapped as Shang-Chi.
